Thanks for the clarification. Now I can be more accurate in my anticipating the length of my new scope. I've enjoyed our conversation. Sorry if it has bored the pants off others but there are a number of other forums. HINT! Certainly don't want to turn this forum into crap. My hope is that a lot of new people join and start a lot of crappy conversations Beats logging on day after day and finding nothing. Mike

Nothing boring about this. Someone looking at getting a big Istar might pass on an 11' long OTA. It's a pretty important clarification! As far as activity here. There are a lot of unregistered visitors daily. If some would just register, and say hi, I'm sure it would spur some good questions for those of us that are owners, and working on becoming owners. I do notice that nearly every time I post at CN, we get a few visitors checking these forums. If many of the members here would put a link in their CN sig line, it might get us some more fuel for conversation.(HINT)

I don't post a lot on CN. Those guys are a tough crowd. Besides, I like the brand loyalty of this forum. I put a link to this forum on my signature as you requested. Concerning your post in the Achro section about larger lens sets... Ales has got to get a lot more lenses and scopes out there to be noticed. Some people are not convinced of ISTAR's reliability to deliver yet. There needs to be more owners. The owner of one of the largest astro suppliers in the US said he is taking a watch and see position. Then, he may be interested. If Ales comes through with half of his ideas, ISTAR will be a hit. I will be taking delivery of a 160 APO in a couple of weeks. If the scope turns out to be what Ales says it will be, and I have full confidence it will, a favorable review would go a long way. Mike

Thanks for the link! Every little bit helps. I know what you mean about CN being a tough crowd, especially when Istar is mentioned. I am almost as excited about seeing your 160 APO review as I am about getting my 150 F/5 R50! I agree that some more "track record" will really make Istar a part of the amateur astronomy fabric.

You would have to think the supply of glass is everything. I don't envy lens makers it is a black art. Scope People throw around glass types and refractive indices like cards in a poker game but the fact is each batch of glass is different.
If you've seen glass getting made, the process is medievel (to me, anyways). Yet we take it for certain that a batch of glass will reflect light by x-amount to 3 decimal places... sure it will. Each batch is different by some degree so it could take a while to get a batch that will match a lens-maker's needs.
Add into that a crazy world with glass being manufactured far away from where it's processed or used and you get a lot of variability in prices and lead times.
With the earthquake and Tsunami I think there is going to be hefty demand for glass for quite some time. I think it could be pretty difficult to get the raw materials to make specialty products for a bit. Those that have an Istar (or any other high end glass) in hand should be feel pretty lucky right now...
