Hi guys. I'm thinking about building a simple box refractor as a test bed for the 6" F/5 Super Achro I have ordered. Something like Mr. Bill over on CN did with his F/5. If I do that, I can test it out for the couple months that I'll be saving to make my "real" scope. Any wood workers among us yet? I'd like to know if there's any advantage or disadvantage to using solid wood as opposed to high quality ply.
Thanks Joe

I'm on with the 6" f8 version of the Istar lens. My intention is to build this from GRP and cardboard postal tubing. I picked up a focuser last week,it's the Skywatcher dual speed. I used the same focuser on the 6" f/10 I built. I think it's a very underrated focuser.
If you are wanting to use wood then I would go for ply. It just doesn't move around as much as seasoned wood does.
Regards. Glen.

Thanks Glen. I think this idea is pretty much dead though. I decided to up the ante, and upgraded my order to the 6" F/5 R50 Super Achro lens. These new lenses won't be in production until mid summer, so I have enough time to gather the actual components for the final build. I think this is going to be an exceptional lens, and I went with a Feather Touch 2535 focuser (already ordered through ISTAR). I hope and believe this will be about as good as 6 inches could get for deep sky observation, and want to bulid it to be of heirloom quality, or at least as close as I can get.

Hi Joe,
I had been looking at the new super achro's myself. I would like to build a 6" f/15,in fact I've just asked Ales if a lens/cell are available.
I can understand where you're coming from with wanting to build an heirloom. So what will be the OTA made from for your new project?
The Feathertouch focusers are really outstanding but I have to keep my ATM passion within limits :-)
Regards. Glen.

7" aluminum tubing, and since this will be a scope that I need to get away from my light polluted domicile to use, I'd like to make it with a sliding dew shield, probably from 8" aluminum, but I've been toying with the idea of a carbon fiber dew shield to keep some weight off of the front end.
