i received a response :
G'day again JP,
But I can understand your regulation , But I think that it is a real pity !!!
Just quietly between us, I do too sometimes. I understand why the site administrators made the rule though since not all solar scopes are well designed. Thanks again for your contributions to CloudyNights and I wish you many happy nights and days observing!

Hello Ricky it's not realy a modified solar scope, But a telescope specially dedicated to the observation of the sun in H-alpha with an objective specially studied for this wave lenght!! you can place with this OTA a daystar filter behind!!!, in this case it is necessary to delete all the posts which speak about filter daystar behind a refractor!!!!
But I can understand your regulation , But I think that it is a real pity !!!
cordialy

G'day JP,
I'm afraid that I had to remove your thread "My Home made 230mm F:D 9 Solar refractor". Your scope is very nice but CloudyNights takes a very conservative view with respect to modified solar scopes because if somebody got it wrong blindness could result. I'm not saying that you got it wrong, I'm just explaining why we have the following rule in our Terms of Service:
"Practicing Safe Astronomy:
Be Aware! CN will not allow posts dealing with the modification of potentially harmful devices such as green laser pointers, PST's, etc. While the results of a modified GLP or PST may seem attractive, the possible adverse consequences are deemed significant. Any posts dealing with these types of modifications, or linking to sites which feature them, may be removed by the moderator."
Thanks in advance for your understanding and I wish you all the best with your solar scope!

I have had threads pulled there for the lamest of reasons because they were about Istar products.
c'est la vie.
jpb, keep posting your beautiful images here.

Guys, believe it or not I don't think this is an Istar thing. I have seen several CN solar filter posts deleted in the past. Modifying or building your own solar scope is extremely risky if you don't know exactly what you are doing... Don't you agree? We know that JP's scope is fantastic and was build very well. But some goof decides to modify his own Coronado PST and after an accident he decides to sue CN because that is where he got the information. I'm sure the solar filter thing is a universal rule handed down by Mike Beeler to prevent litigation. Don't sweet it guys. JP can post all he wants here and there are other forums dedicated to solar chat.

This was my take the instant I saw the mod's explanation. I agree with Mike. What I don't agree with is that no idiot is ever held accountable for his own actions anymore. With a tort ladened society there doesn't seem to be an end in sight either. Mike

I am finding these days that I only log on to go straight to the refractor forum archives , great reading as to how our be-loved refractors have changed over the years , not to mention there is no Istar bashing in these, just good old fashioned , great people talking about our loved refractors . You can see the change and when it happened by going back a little and reading . Such a shame . I dont even go into refractor forums any more , sick of it . Hopefully its only a faze . Brian.

I agree Brian. I used to enjoy reading CN for good information and astronomy camaraderie. It's nothing but a soap opera and mindless bickering. I think the people that used to watch "As the World Turns" are now posting on CN. The moderators seldom intervened. It was usually just that the topic was going way off. Now they steer the conversation according to their own thinking and agenda. I don't bother anymore either. I rather spend my cloudy nights on some thing other than Cloudy Nights.
