James, Ales is still saying we'll have the visual model out by late fall. It would be ready now but they ran into a problem with a glass supplier providing the wrong information. I assure you this product is a HIGH priority for us. We get two or three inquires a week.
Joe, I forwarded your question to our optician. I will let you know as soon as he gets back to me. I'm trying to think optically why not?

Hi,
Will the visual use Raycorr be usable with non-Istar lenses? For example, with a Helios (Synta) 6" f8 achro? Or, would replacing the optics with Istar achromatic lens set be another (better?) option?

Ant, yes the Raycorr will work with other company's scopes (optics). Quote from Ales, "The Raycorr sparked a lot of interest since people were happy with the original Chromacor. But Chromacor was first of all very expensive, secondly a pain in the butt to set up. Our own version will use a standard high quality diagonal already connected to the Raycorr so set up will take seconds rather than hours of playing around with spacers, collimation, etc." The Raycorr will not turn your Achro into an APO. There will however be a marked improvement and well worth the price.

Thanks Mike, sounds very interesting and something I'll keep an eye on now. So presumably, replacing the optics with an enhanced achro set by Istar AND using the Raycorr will get the thing pretty close to colour-free (without meaning to be too controversial )?

Ant, I imagine an F8 6" has rather excessive false color (CA). However, I'm not sure about the "feasibility" of changing optics. Do we know that an Istar cell would bolt in? Or, do you have this worked out. If so, which Istar lens are you interested it?

No, nothing planned yet, just thinking ahead and toying with ideas really. I suspect I'll try the Raycorr first of all, once they're available and see how that goes with the optics I have.

I'm noted for being hard headed as well as dumber than a rock. I only use 4-element plossls period. Not sold on buying high priced exotic eyepieces. It's mentioned about the light loss in the L3 and Pro6. I don't care because my eyepieces coupled with a Raycorr would total only 7 or 10 pieces of glass. Hell those Naglers etc. have a dozen or more elements already in them....am I correct? There's around 20 elements give or take going out the gate already with all those different exotic eyepiece designs and such. Mike

Hard headed... probably. Dumber than a rock... doubtful. I'm strictly a Televue guy. 3.5, 5, 7, 9, 13, 17, 35 Naglers and a 21 Ethos. Naglers have 7 elements and Ethos have 8. Having compared countless eyepiece designs I have never noticed any light loss. High tech coatings allow increase light transmission. Although no lens is perfect and there is bound to be some loss. I like the wide fields, black background and high contrast. Of course, this is my personal preference. Supposed to be the beauty of long focal length achromatic refractors is not having to use exotic eyepieces. So, guess I'm just as hard headed...
You may be missing the point of Raycorr Mikey. Raycorr is for bright objects as this is where false color is most noticeable. Here, loss of light would not be an issue. False color is not an issue on dim objects where your loss of light would be of concern. So, use Raycorr on bright objects and take it off for dim objects.

Mike....Yeah I'm aware it is for bright objects only but I really don't want to take it in and out. Will these Raycorrs screw onto the nosepiece of a 2" diagonal? All I need to do is drop the dang thing in the dark even tho I have outdoor carpet on a concrete floor. No sense tempting Murphy!! You wouldn't happen to venture a guess as to how big these lenses would be say 1"-1-1/2" in diameter. Kinda like a short barlow like size? Just curious. ???Mike

Guys, all Raycorr models will sell with a special Istar brand diagonal alrready mounted to it. The guessing work of proper distance will be than resolved. Eeach corrector/diagonal combo will be individually star tested. So to set one of these up will take few seconds.. the original Chromacor required 40 minutes to few hours of set up time incl. a lot of guess work. Optically the original Chromacors, especially the later versions were top notch and hundreds of people are still using them and swear by them. We only wanted to take the long set up out of equation. The observing time is way too valuable so we decided to design this instrument as an ready to use combo. Best regards, Ales

How effective will it be in the 150mm f15 scope?

Still would like to know if they will work for the "R" achros. Joe Joe, YES, our upcoming Raycorr APS4 (visual and APS format photo version due to be released in 2012) and Raycorr FF4 (professionaly version, due to be released in 2013) are optimized to work with all R30 and R35 lenses. This includes the following lenses and OTAs from ISTAR: Asteria AT 127-8 R30 (will ship by end of July, reserve yours NOW) Asteria AT 127-12 R30 (in production, we are takingi new orders) Asteria AT 150-8 R30 (in production, due to be released by end of August, make sure to pre-order yours now since we have a very limited number of lenses in production) Asteria AT 180-8 R30 (lenses will be available by end of July, OTAs by mid. fall 2012) 250 F/11 R30 lens in cell (special order only, 5 mo. delivery time. Read a numerous tests and comments from the actual user of this magnificent lens Mr. Mike Carman) Ares WFT 127-5 R30 (introduced by end of 2012 if there is enough interest in this compact comet hunter OTA) Ares WFT 150-5 R30 (OTAs are finished and on the way from Europe to USA. Lenses are due to be finished and tested by end of July. Order yours NOW, we have a very limited amount of lenses in production and new ones wont be available until end of this year or 2013) Ares WFT 180-6 R30 (this one will be produced only if there is interest from buyers. It would be a VERY nice, still a fairly compact OTA with a lot of bang considering a full 180mm of clear unobstructed aperture... so anyone interested please let me know at ales@istar-optical.com thank you I have some good news for all of you waiting for the Raycorr special corrector. We have succeeded finding a company which is able to sell us 100 sets of the glass types we need. The only problem is the glass blank thickenss available so we must tweak the design further but now I can say with assurance that we will be able to produce Raycorr still this year unless the glass quality from this supplier is bad or if someone else purchased the entire stock before we do. There are 4 different glass types, 3 of those are exotic and extremely hard to find. So after 20 months of hard work we finally see some light at the end of the tunnel. Bare with us, this Raycorr corrector should be well worth the extra waiting time... cheers, Ales

Again I want to clarify about your Raycorr as follow:- Raycorr APS4 (visual and APS format photo version due to be released in 2012) and Raycorr FF4 (professionaly version, due to be released in 2013) Is this just 2 types of classification use, and for each type of classification use, will there be also different version for different F ratio.... Such as one for F8 and above, and one for below F8....... ? REgards James Ling

James, each one of these Raycorr types will be released in 3 subcategories, namely for
F5 to F7,9 F8 to F9,9 F10 to F15
Than each one of these will have 3 models, for under, over and 0 correction. So each Raycorr line will be released as 9 separate models covering all scopes from F5 to F15, over corrected to under corrected optics. I hope this explains. We may not be able to release all of these models in Raycorr APS4 this year, but we will offer at least the F5 to F7,9 first. cheers, Ales
