A Year and a half ago I've finished a 6" f/15 IStar Achro. Pics here: picasaweb.google.com/100018954367956374706/6F15RefractorThan I've made another 3 scopes, two of them Reflectors 6" f/8 (One I gave as a present to my sister's son) Now, To complete a 6" f/8 set, I'm considering making a Refactor (Achro) this size. any suggestions will be gratefully appreciated. The Rail design I've saw in one of the threads is very attractive.

Your 6 inch f15 looks great. I think a 6 inch f8 would be wonderful for wide fields and deep sky viewing. The famous Leslie Peltier (Starlight Nights) used a 6 inch f8 refractor for many years. The rail design is light weight and useful for lens testing and inital trials however my personal preference would be for a lightweight ply tube as in your f15.

Hi eorion2, it's been a 6" F8 that ive been putting together. it's worth it. I wouldn't be able to move a F15 around like I have to - can't leave it set up, an wether I want to or not - I'm feeling - therefore acting my age. I guess wisdom is having the time to think things through 10 or 15 times while doing them since ya' gotta move slow anyway. Nice scope, I thought about wood too, but had this junker I made the mistake of buying, but it's usefull now, and aluminum @ 1200mm is a bit light than wood thats finished enough to handle being in the weather.

Hi, I'm also considering a 6" f/8 or f/10 to use on h-alpha sun imaging and eventualy on variable stars. I would like to ask if any of you has made an open/trust structure for a refractor, and if in the solar daylight use could be good or there would be too many reflections. The question born with the need to reduce as much as possible the weight, because I cannot buy a new mount. I only has an eq6 pro (atlas/sky watcher).

Hello, we have the right lens JUST designed. We are producing two sets of 228 F9 H-Alpha for the well known observatory in Germany and one in France. These are now in production. but we can ad the 150mm F10 H-Alpha, check the specs and price on our web site istar-optical.com Regarding the truss style refractor, it is a combination of open frame construction and tube style refractor. We are now building the 150 F12 model, will be finished before Christmas, possibly sooner. We will test this model against classic closed tube style refractor and if OK, we will offer 150 F8 in addition to f12. No F10 planned for this year but if you are going to prepay for this scope we will make one just for you, no problem. The open wire frame is not good for day time observation but you can simply use the special cover/shroud we plan to produce or make kone for yourself.. this way you can use this new lightweight scope for all types of observations including the day time terrestrial. The solar imaging and observation is no problem, but keep in mind that you must buy the special H-alpha filter for solar observing and those are not exactly cheap. But we are the only place offering optimized H-Alpha lenses at very low cost. So please stay in touch, talk to you soon, cheers, Ales
