I've been curious myself, I haven't read any reports if Istar APO's yet... Sean

It's really puzzling. You would think that someone out of Cloudy Nights huge membership would have gone for the appealing prices for big APOs. Maybe with all the attention that the big achros are getting, not enough readers are aware that Apos are available? I think, at any rate, that once one of them actually shows up on CN, they will really take off.

I hope so for Ales' sake.
It appears that most prefer to purchase known name brands rather than straying from the herd. Maybe he should send one of his scopes to a well respected user for them to review, this may help sales?
I am stoked on my ISTAR and I am doing what I can to spread the word.

I'm very interested in ISTAR APOs, but I prefered starting with an achromat, 500$ is not a high risk. It is more difficult (for me) to pay 3000$ or more without references. I received my 150mm F/12 achromat two weeks ago, but I try to design my mechanics to be compatible with the 160mm F/12 superachromat, that I could purchase next year. (this depends also on the EUR/USD change, I'm in Europe, if 1 EUR goes to 1.55 USD, or higher, this year, I may purchase sooner).

I will be taking delivery of a 160mm F12 APO next month. I will be testing it and writing a review for Astronomy Technology Today magazine. Hopefully this will be a beginning for Ales in the APO market.

Great Mike, how about a first-light report here? I'm sure ATT wouldn't mind getting scooped! I have a feeling you will get the benefit of everyone else's experience with Istar so far. Between the good customer service and being receptive about testing and reports, you can have some confidence that Istar knows what the customer expects, you can have some confidence in that magnitude of purchase (at least I would!)

Hopefully this will be a beginning for Ales in the APO market. Mike I'm sure there will be MANY anxiously waiting for that review. Having seen so many great reports on all manner of achros, I'm sure the APO will meet the needs of the "APO crowd". Once a few positive reports on the APOs start showing up, I believe a lot of brand loyalty will be overcome by Istar's quality and pricing.

Thanks for the warm reception! You can imagine how anxious I am. Since this is the "loyal" crowd I will report here first. Ales says just a couple more weeks.

There are two or three 160 F12 Lanthanums available now. However, there are "slight" issues with the lenses. Ales is offering them cheap. The lenses seem to have "shifted" 2mm during rough shipping. This can be remedied by a fairly knowledgeable owner. We have sold one so far. I would have to look for the price but it's a third of the norm. The third lens had to be ground thicker to remain in place in it's cell. So, those lenses are being ground now. I changed my mind sometime back and ordered a 6" Fluorite. It is on it's way to me now. I will have it by next week. To own a scope of this caliber has been a life long dream. Ales is making it possible for me (yes, i still have to pay for it despite my Istar employee status). I told Ales I would give him one if he worked for me, but that didn't work. Imaging will commence soon! Attachments:
