Hi Walter... / ALL..... I don't think at this moment, any shoot out between the 8" big achro, be possible..... But sooner when the Istar with R30 are delivered to those orders, it will be really interesting to see who is much more superior..... When I make up my mind, two years ago to grab Ales's offer of the 8" F9 big achro, I also started to read the CN telescope review on the APM TMB 8" F/9 Achromat.....http://www.cloudynights.com/item.php?item_id=1469 , and through the past 2 years of intensive using the Istar 8" F9 achromat, I can give my comments, what these 2 scopes have in common.... 1. Both are very big and not easy to handle.... you really need massive mount..... 2. Both have colour, but you can see lots of details on the planets , such as Jupiter...... Both are capable of powering up above 400X, when the condition is ideal, for planets such as Jupiter and Saturn....and still get a good contrast..... Unlike SCT with similar aperture, you cannot achieve that ... 3. Both when go for DSO, can rival those SCT with bigger aperture, showing better contrast. The Istar has only 2 DSO that could not beat my C14, which is omega century and gas clouds in M42....., but is also the Istar that I have seen 2 E and F stars within the tapezium in M42.... 4. I think my Istar has one feature that I thinkis better than the TMB, which is the cooling down time.... Mine is the passive type, with 5 ovals opening at the counter cell..... Hi James thank you very much for your report. Yes both are big and heavy scopes. I only hope my G11 can handle them for solar work. Short tracking, some 40 sec. We will see

Thanks as well James , when I wil Tat's Lotto my Istar Refractor and TMB will go head to head for a long time .... ... dreams are free , so at the moment my 127mm Achro does nicely , thank you Istar . When the weather clears and I need a bigger hit my Tak M210 will come out , comparable to a 178mm apo? , easily beats a friends AP152mm f/9 on everything . An Istar 204 ( full 8 inch ) is in another league , I think . Prove me wrong . Brian.

Bugger to fast pushing post !!! ,, the mount is the main problem , hell yea , my Tak M210 sits happily on my Ioptron IEQ45 , there is no way a TMB 178 , or 204 Istar will be happy on my mount . Brian.

I can chime in here my Celestron CGE mount will carry my 8"F8.8 ACH However it needs a bigger mount. No such thing as to big of a mount. I have seen wonderful things in my 204mm 1800mm FL scope. So just get as big a mount as you can. A Parallax HD150 non goto is a lot less expensive Than some out there. Good luck and happy viewing.
