I plan to convert my synta 150 F/8 to a F/10. I plan on machining an adaptor plate with collar to attatch the Istar lens cell to the dew shield section on the synta lens cell. A colimatable slide tube extension with my crayford focusor attatached to the busines end should complete the assembly. Has anyone done this before? Or should I just replace the existing F/8 lenses? I am a machinist working in engineering, so have lathes mills ect. to do this. Any comments will help. Doug. Attachments:

Welcome aboard Doug. Sounds like an interesting project, but I think if I had your tools and abilities, I would make something from scratch for the F/10, and just sell off the Synta to offset costs. After all, the F/10 isn't all that much less portable than the 8. A convertible would make more sense to me if you were going to go F/12 or longer, and would still want the F/8 "to go". Maybe you engineer types just like to tinker though, and that's good too! Just remember to give us lots of pics!

Hello Doug, I agree with Joe. If I had the machines, I would build a new scope from scratch. The necessary materials would cost nothing. The machine time is all the expense when it comes to the tube, right? The only appreciable expense will be the lens and focuser. Oh, and if you decide to build your own, make sure you put handles on the rear plate. I love handles and no one but ATMers put handles on. Mike

Welcome aboard Doug. Just wanted to say that owning an Istar lens is for me anyway a dream come true. The next best thing in this hobby is having what you have at your disposal.... and that is the tools. At least I got super lucky and have a CN's friend John who is a machinist. He also is retired but kept enough of his machine shop intact to keep from going stir crazy and for this I'll be forever indebted. I'll probably have to give him a "peek" when we're done tho'. ;D ;D Mike
