Hi nobody.... Do you have a photo or link to aluminium girders? I'm intrigued. Really I know nothing about Engineering and specially electrics and really just went with what was available and affordable. Been lots of fun and learning going down the DIY EQ mount route. I just couldn't buy an off the shelf mount...so boring . You have no doubt seen the 'show us your mount/scope' threads on CN. The good ones are the DIY things. Some inspiring and wonderful creations on there. I'm spoilt by my 1877 mount and everything' has to be measured to that I am happy to say. Have owned the mass produced mounts in the past but never again will I have one......whoops ....a bit of a rave there...what ever happened to ATMing? Seems to be a dying art Matt

Hi Matt I just meant channel or shallow U-shaped sections. I 'inherited' some heavy aluminium channel which came as a foundation with a secondhand greenhouse. Very handy for ATM. Talking of which: I think the drop in prices and increase in quality and range of commercial products made ATM relatively "uneconomical." I used some of my channel to make up box sections with beams for my [unfinished] "spar" 10" f/8 Newtonian. The channel sections are the dirty looking bits in these blog images: fullerscopes.blogspot.dk/2015/06/potty-training.htmlfullerscopes.blogspot.dk/2015/06/beam-me-up-again-potty.html

Gotcha now Chris....much nicer than nobody What creative use of old/new cooking pots too...love it. When I finish the 2" PB I'd like to embark on my next creation an 8" f10 semi-apo or 180 f11 semi-apo. For this I want to make my own tubes and will keep in mind the square section channels attached to round ply rings with 0.5mm Al sheet riveted together over that....just a vague idea right now. I do have the Dew shield already...a 10" spun Aluminium tube that the former owner of my 10" used as a dew shield when imaging with the scope. It sits in my shed waiting patiently. I'll have to keep looking at your ATM blogs Matt

I'll have to keep looking at your ATM blogs Matt Thanks, Matt, for the kind words. Telescope making has been more of a lifelong hobby than the actual astronomy. I developed a habit of noting what might work instead of a commercial product. But then I tend to go for strictly functional rather than "posh." The important thing is never to be afraid of making mistakes. As long as they are not too costly and you learn from them. ATM is probably unique in the range of skills and materials one can play with. Consuming spare time enjoyably is the main thing. Chris
