Hi my name is David and a lover of refractors primarily. I have on order an Istar 6" f12 lens cell from Peak2Valley instruments in Derbyshire around which I hope to make a beast of a scope. As this is my first build I'm really excited to that first light although that may be some time away. I'm really looking for some tips and advice and guidance on my build, thanks in advance for that and I look forward to looking at other scopes on the forum.
PS I'm an active member of the Astronomy Shed forum under the same username.

Hi David, Welcome to the Refratoholics scope club!
6" f12...nice. Big enough to be a real refractor and small enough to transport around.
I have had a great deal of enjoyment and an education making my 6" f12 and then rebuilding my old pillow block mount.
I'll look foward to yor build.
To kick off. What are you intending to build...a TCR type or traditional tube? Workshop tools? Lathes etc???
I'm going to buy a small lathe soon...welll this year sometime, would have made my work so far so much quicker and higher quality too....some re-building to come.
I digress....

Hi Matt,
Thanks for your interest.
I have no big machinery for machining etc but I was in the trade years ago and still have contacts for 'foreigners' should the need arise.
Having purchased the lens cell, and soon a quality focusser, I will start to consider the bit in the middle. I'm quite happy for this build to be a long term process of improvement so may start with some 6" drainage tube or aluminium tube. Ultimately I'd like carbon fibre tube but that's big bucks.
Will form a build thread as soon as I collect the lens cell in March.

Hi David,
Welcome to the Istar club !
I'm based near Bristol in the UK and have an Istar Perseus 6" F/12 achromat. It's a beautifully made beast of a scope !!
I've not been able to use mine too much as yet because I'm still working on a really satisfying mounting for it that does not cost the Earth !.
Cheers,
John
