Took the scope camping out to the desert last week. There were two couples camping next to us, early 50s looked like. After I set the scope up and got going, the two women came over and asked to look through the scope. It was performing really well, the moon was razor sharp. The two women were absolutely blown away. It was their first time with a scope. We checked out the moon, jupiter, mars, and M42. I answered their questions and did my best to be an ambassador. When done, they each came over and gave me a hug and told me that I had changed their lives (I know it was not me but the killer ISTAR!) and that it was one of the most memorable experiences they had had. It made me super happy that I could provide them with such a life experience.
ISTAR...changing perspectives and lives!

Great experience Kevin. Thanks for sharing. We did a viewing session for some scout troops a few months ago. I had one of the parents looking through my scope at M42. He said I had fulfilled one of his life long dreams to look through a telescope. After he said that I just stood there with my mouth hanging open. I almost didn't know what to say.

It always takes me by surprise when letting non-astronomers look through my telescopes how enriching the experience can be. That is for both of us. I get maybe more pleasure when other adults are getting their first view through a telescope than with children. Explaining what they are looking at and why it is so amazing they can see it at all always moves people.
I can see why James and others keep going back to sidewalk duty.
