Hey everyone,
Just wanted to post a quick update on this before bed. Been a long week at work, so haven't had the time (or energy) to get any info posted.
Well, we hit a snag... at the moment the lens is on it's way back for Ales and his team to determine what the issue is. I didn't manage to get any clear nights, but did spend a good bit of time with it on an artificial star. There was an issue (or issues), but I haven't been able to determine exactly what. It's possible some of what I was seeing were artifacts of another problem.
In short, there was a glare problem especially around the airy disk.
I'm inclined to think the coatings may be somewhat the issue. I think Mike deserves a prize for being the first one to comment (or question) the coatings from my initial pictures. They are minimal at best compared to my achro, and I have read that depending on the curves and spacing, this can introduce reflections.
Ales has another potential idea, and I think this one has merit as well; lens shift and/or rotation caused during shipping. He tested this specific lens before and didn't encounter the issues I was seeing. That, and I did notice that the spacing of the tabs was off (rotationally) between the lens elements.
So that is where things are. Disappointing for sure, but Ales (as usual) has been showing a great deal of concern and dedication to ensuring I'm happily taken care of. I think he is more disappointed than I am! ;D I'm sure it will all get worked out.
I'll keep posting updates as things happen. Hopefully the weather will improve sometime (they are calling for a warm summer here, if you can believe that!). That and work is supposed to settle some as well, so I'll have time to observe again (I hope!).
Clear skies,
-Gord
