So, another question on this... I'm playing around with color schemes and wanted to hear some opinions. I really like traditional white, and I think it has some real benefits for daytime (solar observing). That being said, I have a cute little Astro-Physics in all black and was toying with the idea of a matching color scheme. The A-P would look good riding on top I think (classic old-school long focus refractor style). What do people think? Attachments:

As you already know the ISTAR scopes are black. I don't plan on using my for solar. I have a small Lunt for that. The ISTAR APO is black with gold and ACHRO is black with silver. So I think the AP would look good riding on the new black 6".

I'm thinking Harley Davidson Concorde Purple for my F/5!

PURPLE? Hmmm I could probably get my wife into astronomy if I bought or built her a purple scope. What a great idea!
Should add that I don't think purple is a girls color or anything. Just that it's my wife's favorite ;D

Hmmmm, purple. Maybe not. I have seen a couple of scopes done this way and they actually looked very good. One was even a classic Unitron. Still, I'm a bit more of a traditionalist. I'm now thinking why not just do a couple of tubes and have whatever color you feel like. Especially if they are cheap. The builder tubes (not counting the work...) are only $7-8 ea. And I've come up with a good way to do the end plates as well that I think I can manage without even having a lathe. Clear skies, -Gord

Gord. Please be sure to document this build with lots of pics. It sounds like a poor man's version of the stuff that APM uses. Particularly interested in attachment points on this material. Won't screws cause wear ?

Gord, thought you might like to see this image we took a few months back through a TEC 160FL and a DMK21. It was just quick and dirty. We weren't realy planning on any imaging. However, we were impressed with the result. Attachments:

Joe, I will definitely post more info on this. I'll try me best to keep up with things better than I have in the past.
I don't think it's as good as the stuff APM uses (KRUPAX), but I can't find that anywhere. It is sort of similar though. And yes, you do have to watch the attachment process to avoid wearing anything out, at least in it's native form. I think using some sort of epoxy or other glue will help with that. And with some of the idea's I've been toying with right now, I don't think it will be an issue at all.
Clear skies, -Gord

Hey Mike,
That is a very nice image for a 160! I'm very encouraged! Yeah it is from a TEC and it is imaging, but it bodes well for getting really nice visual images out of this scope. I'm not intending it for imaging or even a replacement for my 10", but it does look like it will be a great all around scope that is more forgiving of the environmental conditions. Way cool.
Thanks, -Gord

I absolutely intend on using mine to image. That's what I do! And while I agree that large SCT and Maks are better scopes for planetary imaging the fact that we coaxed this image out of a short focal length refractor tells me I'll be pleasantly surprised with the results I'll get out of my new scope. I'll know in a short time and you will too because I'll post them here

Really! If those guys don't hurry up with my scope, I might have to fly over to the Czech Republic and buy their lunch or something.

Well, my lens is on a plane flying over the ocean! Won't get it until Monday though since it's a holiday weekend here. Oh well, the weather is not going to allow for anything anyway, but I do want to get going on the test rig. Happy! -Gord

Well run on down here then. The weather is perfect (upper 70s)and the sky doesn't have a single cloud in it. I live under dark skies. Moon doesn't come up until 12:30. We could have a blast.
;D
