Hi every one , I have finially got my act together and will now consolidate some photos and the story of my Istar retro fit into a 2nd hand Saxon ota I got minus its lenses .
Around the begining of november 2012 I came across an 'old new stock' Saxon 127mm f/9 OTA minus its lense for $150aud of the Australian astro site 'Ice in Space' , it was brand new and in awsome condition .
Saxon have not produced this scope for many years with its nice pearl white paint and it has a beautiful Vixen 1 1/4 inch focuser attached .
It duely arrived and I sent an order to Mike at Istar for a 127mm f/8 achro doublet .
While I waited for the lense to arrive I played around with mounting , tube lengths etc as showen in the photos , well ! it was only 10 days untill the 127mm arrived from Istar to me here in Darwin Australia , impressive !!!
I had to machine up a counter cell before I could test it , but that was no problems as we have a lathe at work and a few nights work seen that made , see photos .
It took about 2 hours to mount the sweet Istar cell into the counter cell and tube , taking my time and admiring the lense at every opportunity I could ,, nice !
First light was a white native pigeon about 75 metres away using my 9mm TV Nagler in full sun to test the CA , or lack of , see photo and make your own judgements .
The moon that night was awsome , I used Rigel to columinate the lense and the image improved all the time ..
I cut the tube to allow bino viewing as I was getting a WO bino viewer for Christmas and they work very well in this scope .
Its been a couple of months now ( the weather here is bad , wet season ) and I have used the Istar/Saxon lots and I am impressed with the quality of the Istar 127mm f/8 achro doublet , vrey good for the sum total of $650 aud total for a scope of this quality , thanks Istar .
Hope you enjoy the photos .
Brian.
