Thanks for the kind words people. Joe, It just depends how far you want to go with the polishing. The 6" seamless tube I bought was in good condition to begin with. I gave it a good rubbing down with a nylon pan scrub first, then moved on to using Solvol Autosol with the pan scrub. Finishing was done by hand with a dry cloth and Maguiars NXT.Lots of hard work. I think the F/10 just pipped it with the amount of CA,but not by much. These lenses are VERY good. How is your Istar project coming along? Here is a pic of a Carton 80mm F/15. I do like Carton lenses Mike, The rings are Parallax Instruments. Attachments:

Since I already have the stock tube though, I may strip the paint off, and see if I can get the right amount of shine to make me happy. I decided to go with the ISTAR OTA for this scope, at least for now. It's been a long wait while they were developing this lens, and I just want to be able to use it as soon as I get it. I might make another OTA for it at a later date, and keep the focuser and lens. Then if I pick up a classical achro lens and a Crawmach focuser, I could sell someone a nice complete scope. Of course all this will have to wait until I recover financially from my recent astronomical spending spree!

Good to hear things are taking shape. I had a little spending spree a while back on the ES 82° eyepiece sale I'm just waiting for a couple of Crawmach focusers,it's been two months now What would a stainless tube weigh? Regards. Glen.

Glen: I'm looking forward to final reports on this one. I think you've mentioned it before, maybe on CN, but what is your technique to achieve that high luster?
Jim

Hi Jim,
The 6" aluminium tube was in much better condition than the smaller tube. Well,it would be of course because of the diameter. The draw tube marks on the smaller tube were difficult to polish out. I can still see them actually.
The 6" tube came in very good condition. I used a nylon pan scrub first, just to see if I could remove the draw marks. This worked pretty well. The slightly deeper dings I removed with 320 grit wet and dry (used dry) then carried on with the nylon pan scrubs.
I then used Solvol Autosol with nylon pan scrubs to get a pretty good finish. Finishing was done with a cloth and polishing with just one finger just like putting a shine on your boots. I was really satisfied until a customer popped round to pick some equipment up from me. He brought round a polishing paste which was Maguiar's NXT for me to try out. This was a much finer abrasive paste (chrome polish) which gave me the extra polish. Like Solvol Autosol it does leave a protective barrier on the alumimium.
I have just ordered a Skywatcher SkyTee II to mount the beast on. I hope to get some Jupiter observing soon. If we ever have a summer here in the UK.
Hope this helps a little Jim.
Clear Skies. Glen.
