This is our long overdue comparison chart between 5 different optical systems. All systems shown have same clear aperture of 150mm and same focal ratio of F/8. Now you can easily see how the following optical system behave and what can be expected at the eyepiece end. Personally I am more than excited about the combination of R30 Anastigmatic doublet and our new Raycorr Pro6. The image quality is in top visual APO level. Considerably better than even CaF2 APO doublet and definitely better than any ED APO or Semi APO doublet on the market today. The final verdict will be known after we test these under stars, but usually the math dont lie and if the lenses are produced in quality we require, the results will be as good as what you see here on these 5 separate graphs. 1 This is the first one showing our standard classic modified Fraunhofer achromatic doublet in 150mm clear aperture and F/8 Attachments:

No. 2 - This is our 150 F/8 R30 Anastigmatic doublet, a big improvement over standard achromat, excellent chromatic aberration control, spot reduced by over 30 percent, much better resolution. All R30 anastigmats already produced or in production now (and 6 new models in 2013) are optimized to work with our 4 new versions of Raycorr correctors. Attachments:

No. 3 - This diagram show how a well designed CaF2 Fluorite doublet performs. We never introduced this doublet to the market though. Im very concerned about leaving the CaF2 element unprotected. But we really dont need this any more.. the CaF2 Fluorite doublets would be very expensive and as you can see on the next diagram, our standard R30 doublet coupled with Raycorr Pro6 V (V stands for Visual) easily outperforms any ED or any CAF2 doublet. No. 4 - Now the graph everyone wanted to see. Our latest Raycorr Pro6-V which is the top end professional 6 element corrector which virtually eliminates the chromatic aberration when coupled with one of our R30 anastigmatic doublets. This corrector will also work with any other standard achromat but the level of correction can not be predicted. I can tell you one thing. It wont be THIS good.. but still very nice improvement in CA. Attachments:

No. 5 - The best of all CaF2 Fluorite triplet. True Super APO performance but difference between this and R30 + Raycorr Pro6-V is not THAT big. Where the difference lays is the price. For example 200mm CaF2 fluorite triplet would cost in 30 000 dollar range. Our 200mm R30 should be below 2800 price tag plus Raycorr Pro6-V which should not cost more than 1000 (a very rough estimate, could be substantially less but also higher), so to get a very good performance for say 4000 dollars (complete scope AND Raycorr) vs. 30 000... personally, I would not think twice... Hey Ales and Merry Christmas to everybody. It's been a while since I hung out here but with some news on the Raycor, I was attracted like a bear to honey.
Imust say the spot diagram looks good, about what I expected based upon my work with my Chromacors. But what really caught my attention was the off-axis performance, specifically, the lack of lateral color, which is a weakness of the Chromacor and similar previous assemblies. I want to do an 8" F8.8 project and this would be perfect. Any more technical details concerning installation, alignmen, placement in the light path would be appreciated.

Hi Everybody, I do not understand how to read the diagrams. I have a CR6" so I assume that #1 would be the one that would relate best

Hello Jeff,
we dont have any detailed technical data as of this moment. We spent nearly two years working on this Raycorr design and we all were more than happy with the latest results. We will do a special self centering housing made of alloy and brass, all inner pars willl be made of brass. I dont think that we should aim after lightest construction possible under the circumstances. The best overall performance, both optically and mechanically is our goal here. The Raycorr will be sold as one set together with our diagonal, we will have two to choose from, the 99 percent reflectivity 12mm thick BK7 mirror or Japanese made prism diagonal. The outer diameter of Raycorr (both the Pro6-V and LT3) will be 2,5" to fit our (and any other standard 2,5" focuser). Set up time (if used with our Asteria, Ares) or if used with our R30 Anastigmatic doublet will be a few seconds (what ever time you need to slide this corrector into your focuser and tighten the knob). We will supply spacers for other scopes and diagonals but iti only make sense to buy them as sets (both new or used). I will have more detailed info by May 2013.

you pick the Raycorr based solely on the F-ratio of your scope. the aperture plays little role. We are first going to introduce version which is designed around our R30 F/8 Anastigmatic doublets but will also work (at lesser quality performance of course) with any F/7 to F/10 scope. After the first version we will offer another model which will work for F/5 to F/6,9 and after this last base version which will be made for scopes from F/10 to F/15 (optimized for F12 R30 doublets). Again, what you see on these spot diagrams is what you get when you buy both the objective lens (or OTA) from Istar. Performance with other brand optics will vary.

like John I have recently ordered a R 30 180 f-8 Anastigamtic.
I was told it would be one of the first series of R30 f-8 lenses to be made.(comm with Mike Hardin)
Will it also be a slim version ?
Like John I am weighing up whether to either make an ota or approach you guys re a TCR type rail ota. I might also be tempted to use one of your focuser's and get a Zeiss dovetail made to fit the two GEM's I have.
A lighter lens would be a bonus.
Are all of the new series of R30 f-8 180 mm lenses the light weight design?

Hello dear Kevin,
we stopped production of all 150, 180 and 204mm R30 doublets and replaced them all with the new R30-SLIM versions. We wont know exact weight of the lens in cell combos until we are all done. Give us additional 6-8 weeks.
I thought that since we came out wiht solution to the thick doublet, many buyers will appreciate the Istar's approach towards this very important lens design change. The combination of our TCR and R30 SLIM will be by far the lightest, high quality refractor line on the market. I believe that compatitors wont be able to reach similar weight unless they simply copy our own design. This will be interesting to observe. Bad thing is that most people wont never find out that this strange construction was originally developed by Istar. We are still a very unknown company. Most prospective buyers dont even know about our existence.
Back to the design process at Istar. Here you see that even when we come out with a new style product (like R30 Anastigmatic doublet) we never call it done and over with. We are involved in continuous process of a new product development as well as re-evaluating all existing lenses, scopes and accessories, trying to make them better. I strongly believe that this approach will pay off in the future.

Kevin, I heard that you are getting a 180-r30 also and would be interested in your thoughts and ides for a tube design. I have been thinking of using an open tube or rail design.
